1. Comfortable Clothing
The most important tip I have is that you should wear clothing that you feel comfortable in. Whether that's a dress, a nice blouse, or a simple t-shirt and jeans. We want to make sure that you are not only looking your best, but feeling your best as well. Wearing an outfit that feels true to you will only make the resulting photos even more reflective of who you are, and the relationship you have with your equine partner.
2. Opt for Neutrals
Solid colors are often the best choice when picking out an outfit for a horse and rider photo session. It offers more flexibility with backgrounds and poses, and doesn't take the spotlight away from your face, or your beautiful horse. Neutrals like black, gray, off-white, are perfect, and even muted colors can work wonderfully as well. Just make sure that whatever color you wear doesn't clash or blend in with the color of your horse.
3. Be Careful with White
Wearing white isn't inherently a bad option, but it can have it's limitations. A bright white can wash out the color of your face, or cause you to stand out a bit too much, depending on the setting for the session. Not to mention how easy it is to get dirty. We are around horses, after all, and they always seem to slobber on us at the wrong time!
4. Show Attire
Wearing your show outfit is great if that is what you want to show off! English and Western riders alike, wearing your nice show clothes can make for exceptional promotional images or photos that exemplify your show career. If you are doing a full length session, I would suggest having a more casual outfit to wear as well, in order to capture the more intimate side of the relationship you have with your horse.
5. Have Fun!
Sometimes, a photo session is the perfect opportunity to wear something you normally wouldn't while with your horse. Do you have a long flowy dress that you would love to wear while riding off into the sunset? Go for it! Do you want to dress as though you will be printed in a fashion magazine? Do it! Do you have a Halloween costume that you want to wear for spooky photos with your horse? I'm here for it. The experience of having fun and feeling comfortable during a shoot is just as important as the end result.
